In 1997 IARC ruled that there was sufficient evidence for inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz or cristobalite from occupational sources to be a proven human carcinogen This verdict was reaffirmed in 2009 by the established mechanistic event of impaired particle clearance leading to macrophage activation and persistent inflammation. Several initiatives, most notably the Industrial Minerals Association Europe’s Dust Monitoring Programme and the European Network for Silica initiative in which 15 industry sector organisations and their counterpart trade union federations collaboratively try to control exposure to respirable crystalline silica and provide adequate health care to its workers, has been initiated since the early 2000’s. There is evidence that collaboration between industry, occupational health services and academia has resulted in lower exposures of the workforce and it has shown that in economic hard times it is hard to keep the momentum of ever improving control and lower (lung cancer) risks.

Abstract
Lung cancer is the most common cancer globally, with more than 2 million new cases per year. It is also the cancer that causes most deaths, i.e. about 1.7 million annually or 18% of all cancer deaths. In the Russian Federation, lung cancer is the most common cancer among men, while still relatively rare among women. In Northern and Western Europe, lung cancer rates in men have decreased in the last 20 years, while the rates in women keep rising. These global patterns are largely influenced by the national smoking prevalence in the previous decades for respective sex. Environmental and occupational risk factors also contribute to the burden of lung cancer, but the extent of this contribution varies over time and by location. There is a large potential for preventing lung cancer development by reducing and eliminating external risk factors.

Asthma and COPD due to occupational agents may mimic each other, making it difficult to diagnostics. The mixed asthma - COPD phenotype is possible too. The evaluation of reversibility of obstruction syndrome and measure of airway hypersensitivity are necessary. The indirect challenge tests (step-test, cold air) tend to be more simple in diagnosis of asthma and can be used in prophylactic check-ups.

Abstract
Shielding properties of conductive protective suits were tested by currents and power frequency electric field strengths for different exposure conditions. The differences between torso and head shielding factors, as well as shielding factors with and without face screen were determined. Near wire and in air capacity exposure test setups were the most valid for head shielding factor assessment.

Abstract
Agricultural workers can be exposed to a wide variety of agents (e.g. pesticides), some of which may have adverse health effects, such as cancer. To study the health effects of agricultural exposures, an international consortium of agricultural cohort studies, AGRICOH, was established. The present analysis compared cancer incidence between the AGRICOH cohorts and the general population and found lower overall cancer incidence in the AGRICOH cohorts, with some variation across cohorts for specific cancer types. The observed lower cancer incidence may be due to healthy worker bias or lower prevalence of risk factors in the agricultural populations. Further analysis is underway.

Circadian disruption and night-shift work have been associated with a range of acute and chronic health effects including cardiometabolic diseases, obesity, as well as breast and prostate cancer. Circadian disruption may also affect the health of the general population because of widespread mistimed lifestyle practices including mistimed eating and sleep patterns and increasing exposure to light-at-night and particularly blue light spectrum through the use of e-readers, LEDs and smartphones. New epidemiological evidence on the effects of circadian disruption and light-at-night in workers and the general population will be presented, and mechanisms of disease and potential preventive measures discussed.

Abstract
Cancer is increasing worldwide and mainly because of the increase in life expectancy it is projected that the number of annually newly diagnosed cancer cases raises from 17.0 million today to 27.5 million in 2040, an increase by 61.4%, that must be reversed. From evaluations of the carcinogenicity of substances it is estimated that about 40% of today’s cancers are preventable, but implementation of primary prevention needs to be more rigorous and structured. Occupational cancers resulting from workplace exposures account for an estimated 3-5% of the total cancer burden and are among the preventable ones. The present review gives an overview of global cancer statistics, successful cancer control measures through primary and secondary prevention, and the role of occupational hygiene in reducing the occupational cancer burden.
